DOBBY RELEASES NEW SINGLE ‘WALK AWAY’

Proud Filipino and Aboriginal rapper and multi-instrumentalist Rhyan Clapham, aka DOBBY today releases his commanding new single ‘Walk Away’

Fiercely battling the constant dismissal and erasure of Australia’s Indigenous history, ‘Walk Away’ is powerful in its truth of Australian colonialism and modern-day cultural disregard.

The damage done to our culture and way of life is evident in invisibility; white Australia’s daily mantra of “get over it / it was years ago / you’re not black / you’re one of the good ones / let it go”… But my existence is resistance, I know who I am, and I represent a fundamental truth that is rising to the surface. This is Walk Away.” Says DOBBY on ‘Walk Away’

Musically, ‘Walk Away’ is infectious from its first note, as DOBBY’s renowned vocal flow overlays sweeping melodies and classic hip-hop beats. The multi-instrumentalist shines in his ability to effortlessly layer instruments and intertwines tones to highlight the messaging of the track within a song that will see dance floors bouncing across the country.

Joining DOBBY on the new track on backing vocals is the collective force of Melbourne based The Merindas. Ballardong Whadjuk and Nyoongar woman Kristel Kickett and Candice Lorrae of Jawoyn and Thursday Island heritage. The Merindas have forged a name for themselves as Australia’s emerging soul sisters, with their innovative style of Indigenous music which they as “electronic pop with a dance-hall feel, alongside hip hop and R&B.”

“It was such an honour being invited to sing on this new track by DOBBY. It reminds Australia that equity here is still long overdue and music is a powerful tool to cast light on injustice.

This track is powerful in every way, the lyrics, the flow, the message and the beat hits hard. It’s everything you’d expect in a DOBBY track.” Said Kristel

Accompanying today’s release is the stunning video produced by Rosanna Mach and Benjamin Baggay at Redscope FIlms. The electric hyper colour clip showcases DOBBY in all his talent while exploring the pages of history.

DOBBY prised the results of the team at Red Scope Films.

“The message of ‘Walk Away’ is fierce and focused, and the incredible team at Redscope Films matched the tone exactly. One of my favourite scenes is with little Rilee and the Bull. For this scene I took inspiration from the Fearless Girl statue on Wall Street; this scene gives me shivers every time.  I’m so proud of the end result!”
